Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and progressive and incurable lung condition that is characterised by chronic inflammation that gives rise to a persistent and recognisable pattern of symptoms and airflow limitation.

Over time, this leads to progressive loss of airway function and other medical comorbidities. Around 1 in 7 Australians aged 40 years and over have some form of COPD and smoking is a big risk factor for its development.

The biggest Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) risk factor is smoking (active, past, or secondhand), but long-term exposure to lung irritants like chemical fumes, dust, and biomass smoke (for cooking/heating) are major contributors, alongside genetics (Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency), childhood respiratory infections, and a history of asthma, with older adults being more susceptible.

• The lung function screening test is done using a small portable COPD screening device and requires you to inhale as much air as possible and to breathe forcibly into the device for at least 6 seconds.
• Your 777 Pharmacist will provide you with your screening results and refer you for further evaluation and follow up.
