What is Menopause?
Most women reach menopause between 45-55 years (average age for Australian women is 51 years) and occurs when you have had no menstrual period for 12 months. It sometimes occurs earlier than expected as a result of cancer treatment, surgery or other unknown causes.
Oestrogen levels (the main sex hormone in women) vary in the time leading up to the final menstrual period (perimenopause) and is no longer produced by the ovaries at menopause.
The menopausal symptoms experienced are caused mainly by changes to both levels of oestrogen and also progesterone happening over months or years as menopause approaches.
There are many options available to help you manage symptoms, including:
1. Lifestyle Changes
- A healthy diet can help with fatigue and mood.
- Being physically active can help with stress, hot flushes, mood and bone density.
- Cooling strategies ie. carrying a hand fan, water spray, wearing loose cool clothing.
2. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) & Non-Hormonal Treatment Options
- Your Doctor will discuss risks and benefits with you when deciding whether HRT treatment is suitable for you.
- If HRT is not suitable, your Doctor can recommend alternative non-hormonal options.
3. Complementary Natural Therapies or Remedies
- Herbal supplements with black cohosh, Dong Quai, Anemarrhea, and Shatavan.
- Phytoestrogens (found in soy, lentils) may help with symptoms.
- Other complementary medicines may assist with sleep issues, anxiety, and pain.
