State governments across Australia are progressively introducing pilot programs that authorise Pharmacists to consult and prescribe for selected health conditions.

Pharmacists delivering these services have completed additional, university accredited training to ensure they are fully equipped to provide safe, evidence based and patient centred care to support you with your symptoms.

What to expect

Your initial consultation may take between 10 and 40 minutes, depending on the nature of your concern.

During this time, the Pharmacist will ask questions about your medical and social history to gain a comprehensive understanding of your overall health and wellbeing. A physical examination may also be conducted if clinically appropriate.

Together with the Pharmacist, you will develop a tailored management plan for your presenting condition. In some cases, this may not require a prescription, as the Pharmacist can provide guidance and support to help manage your symptoms effectively.

Nausea and Vomiting - 18 years and over
Ear Infections - 2 years and over
School Sores - 1 year and over
Shingles - 18 years and over
Minor Wounds - 5 years and over
Mild Pain and Inflammation - 18 years and over

Women's Health

Hormonal Contraception - 16 years and over
Uncomplicated UTI – 18 to 65 years

Skin & Allergy Management

Eczema - 6 months and over
Psoriasis Flare Ups - 16 years and over
Acne - 12 years and over
Hay Fever - All ages

Preventative & Lifestyle Support

Travel Health - 2 years and over
Oral Health - 18 months and over
Smoking Cessation - 18 years and over
Weight and Obesity - 18 years and over

Chronic Condition Screening & Management

Asthma – 16 to 65 years
COPD - 35 years and over
Cardiovascular (Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Blood Sugar levels) - 18 to 79 years

No. After assessment, your Pharmacist may recommend non-prescription treatment, self-care advice, monitoring, or referral instead of a prescription.
Yes. Pharmacists providing prescribing services have completed additional accredited training and must meet ongoing clinical governance and competency requirements.
With your consent, relevant information will be shared with your GP to support continuity of care.
A consultation fee applies in all states except Victoria. The cost of the medication, if deemed appropriate, also applies in all States.

If your symptoms suggest a more complicated infection and antibiotics or a referral are clinically appropriate, your pharmacist will guide you through the best pathway for care.

Resupply of OCP
If you’ve run out of repeats or your script has expired and you have seen your GP within the last two years you may be eligible for the resupply. You must only be using the pill for birth control (preventing unwanted pregnancy) Other terms and conditions, as well as age requirements per state apply. Contact your local pharmacy to check if they’re able to resupply your medication.
