HOW YOU CAN HELP

Australians should remain alert and informed, but not be alarmed.

Avoid close contact with anyone who is unwell with a fever, cough or is sneezing.

Regularly wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitiser if available, particularly after coming into close contact with another person or a public surface.

Always cover your mouth with your bent elbow when coughing or sneezing, or use a tissue and dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes with unwashed hands – germs can enter your body this way.

Practise physical distancing by keeping 1.5 metres away from others wherever possible.

Wearing a mask can help protect you and those around you.

Optimise the body’s immune defences by eating well, getting enough sleep, being up to date with flu vaccinations and COVID-19 vaccinations, and reviewing existing health condition management with your Pharmacist or Doctor.

If you have cold or flu like symptoms you should get tested for COVID-19, even if your symptoms are mild.

If you feel unwell stay at home and rest, unless you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, in which case seek medical care and call in advance.

What is the 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can make humans and animals sick. They cause illnesses that can range from the common cold to more severe diseases.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China. The pathogen that causes COVID-19 is named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough and/or shortness of breath, like the symptoms of the common cold. Other symptoms include runny nose or congestion, headache, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, nausea or loss of appetite, diarrhoea, vomiting, temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste. In severe cases, the virus can cause pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress. From what we know now about COVID-19, the symptoms can occur between 1 and 14 days from exposure to the virus. If you suspect you may have these symptoms, and you have been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 patient or recently travelled in regions know to have an outbreak in the last 14 days, please call the Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080.

Can COVID-19 be transmitted from person to person?
Yes, COVID-19 can be spread from person to person. This can happen when a person comes into contact with the respiratory droplets from an infected person, for example, through coughing or sneezing, or from touching objects or surfaces that have droplets from an infected person and then touching your mouth or face. Spread of this coronavirus from person to person is usually between close contacts.

Will the influenza vaccine help?
While the flu vaccine won’t combat COVID-19, it will help reduce the severity and spread of flu, which can lower a person’s immunity and make them susceptible to other illnesses. This position is supported by Health Minister, Greg Hunt.

What about timing between vaccines?
COVID-19 vaccines are delivered in a primary course of two or three doses, with a booster dose from 3 months after your last primary course dose. Click here to find out more.
The Department of Health have advised a COVID-19 vaccine can be given on the same day as an influenza vaccine.
