We are well into the Winter season now and there have been many illnesses around, if you haven’t yet considered getting a flu vaccination, now may be the time. Australia is currently experiencing a “late” 2025 flu season and Pharmacy 777 Managing Director Kim Brotherson shares “it’s not too late in the season to get a flu vaccination.”
“A lot of people assume if they haven’t had a flu vaccination yet, they’ve missed the boat this year,” Kim says.
“But that’s not the case… Australia is experiencing a late influenza season in 2025, and we urge people to still consider getting a flu vaccination.
“Influenza cases are nearly 20 per cent higher this year than they were last year – in fact 2,800 cases were recorded last week, the highest weekly total of 2025 so far.
“Getting vaccinated against the flu is still the most effective protection, it lessens the severity of the illness and lowers the number of hospitalisations.”
Australia’s 2025 flu season started with a significant surge in influenza cases and hospitalisations. And while flu season traditionally runs from April to October, because of WA’s late start to winter, our flu season is peaking from now until September.
In 2025, there have been 174,492 flu cases nationally so far, according to the government’s national notifiable diseases surveillance system (NNDSS).
There have also been 115,476 cases of COVID-19, and 94,404 cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and 16,125 cases of pertussis (also known as Whooping Cough) this year to date.
